“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~ Mark Twain

    Kanahau Application Form

This section is for General Volunteers wishing to assist on all current projects at Kanahau, and Independent Researchers that wish to develop and lead their own projects.

As a General Volunteer you can get involved in all on-going field studies, aiding staff in a wide range of data collection to broaden your research experience. You do not need to have prior experience to join this programme,  as you will be trained in research methodologies, receive lectures on island flora and flora and assist researchers in the field, as well as take part in the education and community outreach programmes. The General Volunteer programme aims to form a well rounded conservation experience, with courses beginning on the 1st of every month between March - September.

As an Independent Researcher,  you will be responsible for developing and running your project with the help of our staff. University students will receive full support and supervision in the field, enabling access to a range of different island habitats and species relevant to your study. If required, students will receive guidance to obtaining the necessary biological research permits for proposed study, as well as advice with grants or funding opportunities to cover expedition costs and accommodation.

If you are interested or have any questions, please make contact with us through the application form below, or alternatively email info@kanahau.com

How much does it cost?
Kanahau runs only on funds generated by donations and research grants. We receive no government funding and as such there is a fee to participate in the research programme.  All these fees go back into the conservation project, providing funds for research equipment, wages for field guides, supplies for the education programme and maintaining the facility.

The fee to  join our General volunteer programme is $495 (US dollars) per week. If you stay for over 3 weeks then a $50 discount is applied, dropping the price to $450 for each additional week.
For example a four week stay would cost $1935.
This includes accommodation, 3 vegetarian meals a day (excluding Sundays), pick up from Utila airport or ferry dock, learning materials, training in research methods,  fieldwork support, kayaking and boat trips for research proposes.

If your are joining us as an Independent researcher the fees are calculated at $375 per week for the first 3 weeks then reduced to $350 per week for every week you stay. For example a 6 week stay will cost $2175.
