The Bats of Utila

Our bat study has two main aims: to continue cataloguing the bat species present on Utila within different habitat types and to estimate the population size of bat colonies living within the limestone cave system (fortunately located next-door to the Kanahau Facility).

Survey methods will include mist netting and the use of a bat detector to analyse echo location calls. Bats captured have data collected on their morphology, as well as being temporarily marked for population estimates.

Setting up the mist nets all over the island has taken us to some very interesting places.

The nets are monitored closely and the bats are quickly removed and identified.
